Description

In this unique course, Director of Photography Shane Hurlbut ASC takes you through his complete preparation process for bringing a story to life on screen. Using the film Deadfall as a case study, we step through a complete scene, from location scout through to the final shooting wrap, learning how to deconstruct the script, block the camera and actors, create moods for different times of day and lighting conditions, and then finally call "Action!" to shoot the scene.

Just as with a real production we hit the ground running in this course, joining Shane as he arrives at the location to kick off the location scout and get inside his discussion with the Director, AD and Production Designer.

As we continue the course, Shane starts to deconstruct the set and script to work out his camera blocking and composition. When we discover that we need to break the 180 degree rule and “jump the line”, Shane shows us a fantastic trick to reset your scene allowing you to make the jump.

The last component to the location scout is the tech scout, where we work out how to achieve the lighting design decided on with the Director and Production Designer. Here Shane works with his Key Grip Dietmar and Gaffer Mark to determine how they can create and control the lighting to be able to reliably create the varying lighting schemes required in the scene.

Following Shane's lighting plan our scene has a huge softbox above the table. Sounds great for Hollywood with a grip and gaff team but what about smaller, independent productions? Here Shane shows us how anyone can easily construct a DIY lightweight, simple and effective softbox that can be rigged, lit and diffused in a number of ways.

08m

Now that our DIY softbox is constructed Shane shows us how to mount your lighting fixtures like a pro.

07m

Now our softbox is rigged it's time to mount it to the ceiling, and to prevent damaging the location as well as provide the greatest versatility we're using wall spreaders. In this module Shane and his Key Grip Dietmar show you how to construct and properly fit wall spreaders.

With our lighting rigged and set up its time to compose the master shot. Here Shane walks us through his rationale with composition and we get to see as he frames up the master for our scene.

15m

With the lighting all placed and the master shot composed Shane takes us through how to balance all the lighting with a light meter so that you're exposing correctly as well as motivating the scene to fit the story.

17m

In this lesson we walk through the blocking of the master shot with the actors, showing how the Director as well as the DP collaborate with the actors to ensure the best possible result for the scene.

Now all our work has come together we're ready to shoot the master. Join Shane as he directs the scene, going through multiple takes to finesse both the look and the performance.

With the "Cinema 360" lighting design that Shane has set up we don't need to do too much to the lighting to now shoot the close-up on the reverse angle. Here Shane takes us through the attention to detail he's looking for when shooting a close-up, while sticking to the Director's brief.

Now it's time to call "action" on the close-up, with Shane showing us how to use all the tools available to us as filmmakers to direct a viewer's eye.

Following the scene the film jumps to another location, and when we return it's much later in the day. In this module we join Shane as he redirects all the lighting to create a dusk ambience and mood.

Subtitles available: English

17m

In this module we continue to set the dusk mood, with the team executing Shane's lighting and grip plan while they also have to deal with technical difficulties on set.

Lighting gags are an important tool in the repertoire of any DP. In this lesson Shane shows us an easy way to create a convincing police light effect.

Subtitles available: English

18m

With the dusk setup and police lights ready to go, Shane takes us through blocking, rehearsal and shooting the next scene.

Subtitles available: English

20m

In this lesson Shane guides us through the change in setup to a two-shot and how he tweaks the lighting accordingly, before running through rehearsals and finally a take.

For the final shot we need to get a reverse of the room, and in this module Shane finesses the lighting to ensure we get beautiful light on the close-up.

Subtitles available: English

With everything in place, Shane finesses the performance before calling "action" for the final shot of the scene and the course.
